WILMINGTON 1898 HISTORY
Wilmington, incorporated in February 20, 1739, is a port city and the county seat of New Hanover County in coastal southeastern North Carolina. Wilmington was founded in the 1730s, and its name became Wilmington in 1740, named after Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington.
In 2003, Wilmington was designated by the U.S. Congress as a “Coast Guard City”. A local major attraction include the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science. Wilmington is the home of EUE/Screen Gems Studios, the largest domestic television and movie production facility outside California.
